Fiji’s rugged and mountainous terrain makes the islands great for mountain biking. There are numerous excellent biking trails, as well as a growing number of tracks specially designed for mountain biking, though you should make sure you are permitted to access them as some (especially those in national parks) are for walking only.
You can choose to go biking on your own, or you can do it as part of a resort activity or tour with a professional guide. Mountain biking is a fun and adventurous way to explore the many beautiful areas of the islands, plus it is a great way to stay active while on your trip.
Best Biking Locations in Fiji
Fiji has a wide variety of wonderful places for all mountain bikers. Tbe Bouma National Heritage Park and the Bouma waterfalls on the island of Taveuni are excellent areas for biking. You can cruise along a dirt road with lush tropical rainforest scenery, then swim and cool off in the clear waters under a lovely waterfall. On the same island, the International Date Line, which is about a 10-minute walk from the Garden Island Resort, is another location worth biking to.
On the main island of Viti Levu, you can mountain bike in the scenic Sabeto foothills, and for a really adventurous and challenging experience, you can try biking Mt. Tomanivi (formerly known as Mt. Victoria), Fiji’s highest peak.
Fiji Bike Resorts and Tours
Resorts on all islands offer mountain biking trips. The Maravu Plantation Resort on Taveuni offers free mountain biking. The gorgeous tropical scenery, including lush rainforests, hidden lakes and waterfalls, and white sandy beaches, makes it a great area to bike at. The Namale Resort, Koro Sun Resort and Naveria Heights Lodge in Savusavu on the island of Vanua Levu are other beautiful areas for mountain biking, especially within their tropical rainforest surroundings. On Viti Levu, the Wellesley Resort in Coral Coast has excellent mountain bike trails on the property.
There are also many biking tours in Fiji. One tour operator, Adventure Victory Inland Safari, offers mountain biking trips, as well as a large variety of other activities, in the interior area of Viti Levu.
You can rent mountain bikes from many tour operators, resorts and bike shops. Though you can also purchase spare parts, it is recommended you bring your own parts just in case the part you may need is not available, especially since there is such a wide variety of bike models. Other items you may need to bring on your trip are gloves, a jacket, long pants, a backpack, water or drinking bottle and a sleeping bag. Of course, wearing a helmet is also very important throughout your entire ride. Most tours have a first-aid kit and emergency medication as well.
